Dr Sarki's brief Introduction during his enforced disappearnce

In February 2006, Safdar Sarki, an American of Pakistani descendantwas forcefully disappeared in Karachi and held captive for more thantwo years by Pakistani military officers in retaliation for hisactivism as a human rights and democracy campaigner in Sindh andPakistan. Despite numerous appeals by U.S. congress members, the USState Department and international organizations and media, Pakistaniofficials refused to reveal Dr Sarki's whereabouts nor acknowledge hiscaptivity. Amnesty International issued "Global Urgent Action" for DrSarki in March 2006. In May 2008, Dr Sarki was finally released from28 months of torture and forced disappearance at the hands ofPakistani Military officers.During this time, he was severely mistreated, tortured, shackled anddenied the most basic needs of food, water and medical services. Hewas constantly questioned and tortured about my alleged infiltrationto Pakistan as an American agent. He also developed a severe eyecondition from constantly being blindfolded, while the tortureinflicted on him caused severe shoulder injuries and two hernias fromwhich he has not yet recovered.Unfortunately, Pakistan is far from being a true democracy andstruggle for human rights is continued by its peoples. There are stillhundreds of disappeared activists who face torture, alienation andmistreatment by the Pakistani army for campaigning for civil rightsand a democratic society.Dr Sarki will be highlighting the matter of forced disappearances andtorture in Pakistan.

KARACHI: Dr Safdar Sarki, Secretary General of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), a separatist Sindhi nationalist organisation, and a motel owner in Texas, US, has been finally released. Zhob's district and sessions judge Rashid Mahmood released him in two cases of carrying Kalashnikov and hand grenades, while Magistrate Zhob Zia-ul-Rehman released him in the case of using a vehicle with a duplicate number plate. His release is the result of personal effort of the chief minister of Balochistan, who had announced to withdraw cases against Sarki at his oath-taking ceremony.Sarki disappeared from his sister's apartment in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on 24th February 2006. His whereabouts remained unknown till his presence at the Sakran CIA Centre in Balochistan on October 11, 2007.Earlier, Sarki was granted bail on November 2 but it was repealed with the Emergency on November 3 in the country. On February 8, his final release orders were issued, but state interference remained the barrier. Sarki, who is admitted to Quetta's Sandeman hospital for treatment, will soon get his eye operation and hernia treatment in private hospitals, his lawyer Muhammad Khan Shaikh told The News. His one eye has lost much sight in alleged torture and he got basic eye treatment at the Helper Eye Hospital, Quetta. Sarki is amongst hundreds of people who went missing when a secret state operation started against Sindhi and Baloch nationalists. The disappeared persons started showing up after deposed chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took notice of the issue. The operation against the nationalists in Sindh started from the workers of the Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) that was later extended to the JSQM and the number of missing workers went above 40. Though almost all of them are back now, several lost health and one life. Inhuman torture marked body parts of these political prisoners. Asghar Shah's body shows marks of drill machine, Akash Mallah has lost hearing, and, according to a source, no hospital is ready to treat Bashir Shah, another victim of state atrocities. Samiullah Kalhoro, Vice Chairman JSMM, lost his life due to torture. Meanwhile, Sardar Akhtar Mengal, a Baloch nationalist and former chief minister, still faces several cases here. Jhanger Rahoojo's Email about Dr Safdar

Daer all , at time of release of Dr.Safdar Sarki , we congratulate the all revolutionary and democratic forces of Sindh. Dr. Safdar Sarki had passed his hundreds days and nights behind the bars only due to his love with home land Sindh. I know him very well from so long when I was president of Jeaye Sindh student Federation Sindh University and he was on same post at Chandka Medical College Larkana, in 1995. Those days of Jeaye Sindh were noble days in which there were proper revolutionary study circles for the members who were enjoying the proper School of thoughts for goodness of Sindh. It will be bad if we shall not accept that the release of Mr. Sarki is due to political change in the country. I hope that people party will think and will do all the good in favor of Sindh and against the terrorists who?s hands are red with revolutionary blood of Muhamtarma Benazeer Bhuto and other thousand innocent perosons. Dr. Sarki is brave, sobar and intelligent one. I hope he will enjoy his life with good
